To promote reading habits among children in the remote mountainous area and widen their horizons, the Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College (HFPJC) bought over 2,200 books with the funds raised from charity sales, and donated them to Guping Primary School in Congjiang County, Guizhou Province.

During their service-learning trip to the school in May 2019, the HFPJC volunteers learned that it had scarce extracurricular books suitable for students. After returning to Macao, they organised charity bazaars to raised money for buying and donating books. The book donation project was smoothly conducted with the generous support of Dr Lee Chau Ping, the president of the Arts, Painting and Calligraphy Friendship Association of Macau.

A list of books was carefully selected based on the knowledge and interests of the local children, covering various genres such as picture books, popular science, art, literature, Chinese culture, inspirational and entertaining books. Considering the reading ability of young children and the local English teaching levels, some books with Pinyin annotations and picture books in English for small children were also included. The latter was aimed at stimulating the children’s interest in learning English.
