To support the SAR government’s initiative to aid Congjiang County of Guizhou Province, the volunteer teaching team from the Chao Kuang Piu College (CKPC) regularly arrange for students to serve as volunteer teachers at the Gantuan Primary School, located in a remote mountainous region. Most of the school’s 150 students are left-behind children of the Dong ethnic group, and teachers of English, music and physical education are lacking. Every year in summer and winter, some 20 teachers and students from the residential colleges serve as volunteer teachers in the school for a week, teaching mainly English, science, music, arts and physical education. A unique activity approach is adopted, through which the children learnt about the world and acquire general knowledge, in addition to developing healthy habits and empathy. The RC teachers and students follow up with the school’s principal and teachers to make necessary adjustments and determine the focus for next visit. In addition, a distance learning programme for English learning was specially designed for the students. Fun educational videos are played during lunch break for the children to learn English in an entertaining way, thus increasing their interest in learning.
