A delegation of 13 students and faculty from Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College (HFPJC) of the University of Macau (UM), led by Associate Master Jiang Yi, visited Nanyang College of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) and participated in the study camp ‘Exploring the Memories of a Millennium, Recalling the Years of Westward Relocation’ from 27 May to 31 May 2024. Students and faculty from both colleges discussed the ‘westward relocation spirit’ and experienced the unique historical and cultural charm of Xi’an. The study camp was the first reciprocal visit since Nanyang College visited HFPJC in March this year.

In her speech at the opening ceremony, Guo Xiaoping, director of Nanyang College, expressed her anticipation for deeper exchanges and cooperation between the two colleges. Guided by Nanyang College’s students and faculty, the HFPJC delegation visited the XJTU campus, an exhibition of Qian Xuesen’s scientific spirit and educational philosophy, the Jiaotong University Westward Relocation Museum, and the state key laboratories. They also visited famous historical and cultural sites in Xi’an, such as the Shaanxi History Museum, Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, Xi’an Ancient City Wall, Datang Everbright City, and Huimin Street, gaining insights into the unique role of ancient Chang’an as an important city on the Silk Road in the development of Chinese civilisation. The delegation also visited the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor and the Terracotta Warriors, where they experienced the grandeur and prosperity of the Qin Dynasty and strengthened their understanding and sense of belonging to the motherland. During a sharing session, the participating students actively shared their thoughts, stating that the study camp not only broadened their horizons and increased their knowledge of China’s history and culture, but also allowed them to experience the unique charm of Xi’an, a city with a long history.

The study camp provided a great opportunity for students and faculty to explore the history and culture of Xi’an and deepen their knowledge of China’s rich history. It also provided valuable learning and exchange opportunities for students and faculty from both colleges, fostering mutual understanding and friendship, and laying a foundation for deeper exchanges and cooperation between the two colleges.
