Choi Kai Yau College (CKYC) of the University of Macau (UM) arranged a visit for its ‘Two Laws’ Ambassadors to attend the Legislative Assembly Building Open Day. The students not only toured Macao’s legislative institution but also gained an in-depth understanding of the legislative process through discussions with Kou Hoi Ian, president of the Legislative Council of Macao, and several legislators.

The students were warmly received by the legislators, who accompanied them on a guided tour and explained in detail the Legislative Assembly’s history, functions, and its crucial roles in Macao’s social development. The visit first began in the hall of the Legislative Assembly Building, the venue where legislators discuss, review, and vote on bills. Guided by the staff, the students learned about the meeting procedures and appreciated the rigour and importance of legislative work.

The students then visited a photo exhibition, where precious photographs documented the development of the Legislative Assembly, offering students a vivid insight into Macao’s political system. To enhance the students’ understanding of the legislative process, the staff provided a detailed breakdown of each stage, including the proposal, review, amendment, and final approval of bills. The students asked questions and engaged in lively discussions with the legislators.

The participating students described the visit as highly rewarding. It not only broadened their horizons and provided them with a broader understanding of Macao’s political system and legislative work, but also stimulated their interest in legal studies and increased their sense of responsibility and purpose as future contributors to Macao’s development.

The Legislative Assembly Building Open Day provided an opportunity for the public to learn more about the legislative institution, thereby increasing public understanding and support for legislative work. For the CKYC students, the visit fostered both a profound appreciation for Macao’s legislative system and a lasting respect for the rule of law.
